you asked for it

Alright, so, maybe about a week ago the lovely Ambika tagged me to show where I blog. I'm cheating and showing you just the desk because I'm currently too depressed to clean up (yeah, that's it)... So there it is.

My lovely old desk, my shiny white computer, my hacked mystic wall clock, the top of my fake Eames shell chair, a prayer plant emerging from the dark, a stack of clothing that may or may not make it into the shop, a stack of paper, a hair ribbon, a giant box of "student quality" pencil crayons (I bought these when I was in uni because I was too cheap to shell out the $100+ price tag for the professional ones. I regret that decision. These are too waxy.), and a drawing that I was working on last night in the dark... almost. I was working on it by light of a single amber glass lamp from my collection of 17 that reside in this room. Here they are, Susan, in all their tacky glory!

Now you see why I hesitated to add another to my collection yesterday; these things take up A LOT of space! I can't even close my closet due to an ill placed orb. There's a couple not pictured because they are in the messy portion of the studio! Photos of them will have to wait until another happier day, when I get around to tidying up!

One of the disadvantages of working by the amber glow of these lamps is the inability to discern colour! It's virtually impossible to differentiate grey from blue, purple from brown, pink from orange, and so on, and so forth. I had no idea what colours I was using on my drawing last night. In the morning light I found pinks and purples where I assumed oranges and browns to be. It was strange. I would never have chosen purple (I think it's for wizards and unicorns), but it kind of works here.

I am a terribly lazy artist. I rarely draw anymore, and I find it so incredibly frustrating that it makes me never want to pick up a pen or pencil again... and paints? Forget about it! I used to be so good at colour mixing it was insane! I could duplicate any colour with ease, but now I don't even know where to start. It's funny how one forgets. As you can see I ended up scratching out the bottom half of this drawing in a fit of rage, but it's all part of the process. I've decided that I must, MUST get back into the habit of drawing and painting. Yes, friends, I'm putting my ego aside and hanging up that case of "masterpiece-itis" that I developed way back when because it inhibits my ability to finish ANYTHING!

Todd M Duym does grace

My friend Todd has an exhibit of woven photographs opening at Grace Gallery on Friday night! I remember talking to him about this project months ago and I'm happy to finally get to see it! I'm such a fan of his work!

valley of the heart's delight

My friend Karin is back from France and has a new photography exhibit opening at Monte Clark gallery tomorrow night! I'm going to pop in for a bit, after work and before heading off to see Deerhunter!

fieldguided

Anabela and Geoff have teamed up and re-opened the fieldguided etsy shop! It's not just vintage anymore... it's so much more! Anabela is creating some really lovely little things and Geoff has some of the most delicate drawings I have ever seen! The two doily drawings above by Geoff are now mine! Yay!

lost days

I disappeared for an entire week! I've been blaming my tiredness on the daylight savings time. I've just been exhausted! Working at the work-job, going home to work on sewing and jewels and stuff every night, all with that awful darkness that winter on the north west coast brings. It's dark by 4pm for goodness sake! I've decided that this might just be the year that I splurge and get myself that SAD lamp. And then there's the days lost to fun nights out with friends and the subsequent day spent sleeping off a nasty hangover. Which is where we're at today.

OR maybe I've been tired because of this:

Helen at Orange you lucky just sent me a note telling me that she had accidentally painted my portrait! Isn't it awesome? This totally made my day today!

So perhaps I'm tired because I've been using some of my special powers to break into her subconscious and force her to paint this glorious portrait! I've got to do this more often! Imagine the fun of seeing portraits of yourself pop up all over the world!

la moustache

This is what happens when you put two weirdo artist types together in the same room with an idea... BRILLIANCE!

Since I started posting my self portraits over at wardrobe remix my friend has been telling me that she's been so inspired to "copy me" and start photographing herself in various themed outfits. I didn't invent the self portrait, and I am a huge fan of staged photography so I was all for it! As long as I got to see the finished result... she wouldn't let me see them. Boooooo!

Fortunately for everyone we agreed upon a collaboration of fake couple's portraits! She bought this amazing fake moustache made of real human hair! I was having a very hard time keeping a straight face during our first installment of "la moustache". Being totally unplanned yet somehow costume ready, I think that some of the photos turned out magnificently! I'm going to need a bit of time to get used to looking at her in a surprisingly authentic looking handle bar moustache! But there will be plenty of time for that as we explore all the different possibilities of couplings!

I've been called many things in my day

But domestic is certainly not one of them!

One of my favourite work peeps is moving to Japan in a month and we are getting together in mere moments to wish her luck and eat pizza and these... um, delicious cupcakes (?) that I made today. These things were made with all the love I have to give and were a true pain in the butt from the get go! I started the batter and then realised that I didn't have any eggs. No bother! I have vegan egg replacer! So I mix the batter up and boy is it fluffy! (ie: full of AIR BUBBLES!) Then I start to line the muffin pan with cups... oh. my. god. there's only 5 left! You think I'd be more prepared! So I rushed off to the store to get some all the while thinking that if I had known earlier I could have also bought eggs. This is the result of my labor...

they'll look better when they're iced I tell myself...

Ummmm, I guess not. They taste better than they look I swear!

I'm typing this while I wait for the epoxy to dry on the pin that I made as a going away gift. She loves elephants and one day we both got all misty-eyed reminiscing about that scene in Dumbo where his mum is in a cage and she cradles him in her trunk. Oy vay! I'm getting all vechlempt just thinking about it! So I thought it would be kind of special to make her something to remember us all by, because an elephant never forgets.

We have this ongoing joke at our work that we are all going to be there forever because we are in HELL! It has, unfortunately rung true for a lot of us (I'm not naming names, but you know who you... ahem, WE are). Tonight we are taking up a monetary collection to pay for knuckle tattoos that read "MOTIV4LIFE" for the girl who is leaving. It's the best gift a girl could ask for... I wonder when I'll get mine!

Ummmmmmm... will you be my boyfriend Olaf Breuning?

From my new favourite the selby!
