Shane Turner Overdrive played his live radio debut last night on CITR Thunderbird Radio Hell. There's a wee interview and he plays a few songs. He was really nervous and it was really cute!

I saw Grizzly Bear last night, and they were as magical as ever! I saw them two years ago in a venue with a crappy sound system and bad sight lines, and I was still mesmerized! This time they played a decidedly more professional venue and it was a thousand times better. I love these boys! They sing like angels and they back that up with chunky bass and drums and chorusy jangly guitars... it's like they're from another time. Just really beautiful.

Their new album Veckatimest came out yesterday too, and I'm telling everyone that you MUST purchase this album... right now! Go get it, and listen to it on repeat. Over and over again. Forever.

P.S.-The opener was Foreign Born, and we were joking that they should really change their name to Foreign Boring. Har har har!

It took me two nights staying up until 2:30 am to block out this gig poster for love and mathematics, sleepless nights and shane turner overdrive (shane doesn't have a myspace yet, so I can't link you anywhere... just trust me when I say he is awesome!)! Unfortunately SOMEBODY gave me the wrong date... so, you know, my lovely poster is going to have to be defiled with horrible black marker numbers to cover up the mistake! On all 500 posters!

Here's the work in progress. In order to do a two colour poster the analogue way, the poster needs to be done essentially three times! Well kind of... Me and my analogue ways! I was high on sharpie fumes by the time I went to bed because I had to do two layers of sharpie-ing to get the fields black enough to print properly, and my eyes have been feeling prickly for days!


So anyway, I was having a hard time thinking of what to draw for the poster. I usually pick one of the bands or something relating to some sort of random theme that is somehow linked to either the time of year, the date, or the bands. Because sleepless nights was on the bill, all I could think of was Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks! I resorted to hacking possibly one of the world's most famous gig posters! I made it my own, but it is essentially a total rip off!!! I'm so unoriginal!

So, about a month ago Shane decided that he was going to enter the CiTR Shindig! competition. At that time, all he had was the best band name ever: Shane Turner Overdrive!, and "an abundance of god given talent"... he did not, however, have any songs! Shane spent the rest of the month working out a set of some pretty great songs. So great, in fact, that he WON the round one competition last night! Congratulations Shaner!

I shot this video of Kellarissa performing Night Wind at last night's Flamingo cd release party. It was such a bewitching performance! The moody lighting paired with her haunting songs was just so perfect! It made for bad photography, but it's the songs that really matter! Larissa is a one woman act for the most part, employing synths and loops and layers of her own voice. It's really something spectacular! Last night, she was backed by three lovely ladies on a couple of songs, creating an even more haunting sound.

Shane also did some modeling for White Apple when he was in Texas. Here he is showing that the oversized brooches aren't just for girls! Thanks Shaner! You look mahvelous dahling!

Band Geek

Well, Shane and the rest of The Choir Practice are on their way to SXSW today. I made up these band sashes for them (a la pathfinders, without the merit badges) to wear whilst roaming the streets in Texas! I so wish I could be joining in on the merriment, but when one is unemployed and the passes alone cost 500 bucks (!) one has to stay home and clean the refrigerator instead. Boooooo!

On the plus side... my sister will be joining me for four days on an impromptu vacation! YAAAAAAY!!! We're going to eat junkfood and shop the whole time she's here! I'm really excited!

Rocktober!

Yesss Rocktober! I'm in the poster art segment of ION magazine this month. I had a feeling that I was going to come across as an asshole in the "interview". I use quotations because those used in the "interview" are not direct quotes! I'm way funnier than that, and I think you all know it.

That said; I also never liked horses. I never understood those girls. I never had those tell tale Freudian dreams of galloping stallions. And I still have dreams of being a housewife... well, crazy-shut-in-hermit-lady. They're pretty much the same thing right?

The Copper Coin Bikini

This is my very first two colour poster! I'm pretty pleased with the results. I think I've entered a new era.
I do all of my posters by hand, which can be a bit of a pain at times. I had to meticulously hand colour all those sun rays on a separate page, while making sure that I didn't overlap the illustration.
People with computer skills, everywhere, are scoffing at me and my primitive ways.

Pagan Poetry

Growing up in a small town had both benefits and drawbacks. In highschool, I was part of the weird art-kid scene. I was "different" and everyone knew it. But it was the nineties and it somehow became kind of fashionable to be a weirdo. This was the era of "alternative" music. This was the era of grunge and alt-dance. This was the era of Bjork!

I've loved Bjork since the first time I saw her in the Sugarcubes video for Hit. "Accidentally, you seduced me. I'm in love again." So as teens see, teens do. I started wearing my hair in the signature Bjork double bun style and I wore my nightdresses during the day. I wouldn't say that I was completely obsessed; but I do credit her with shaping my style as a teen.

I've wanted to see her forever, but hadn't had the chance until this Wednesday past. I sacrificed good photos for good sound and I don't regret that at all. I just wish that I had the power of teleportation so that I could have zoomed in close to get a shot of her dancing in her tasselled head dress!

So what does one do when they can't get close up shots of Bjork? That's right. You take photos of the lazer light show!!!

Sometimes The Big Stuff Comes To Town

I met Jarvis Cocker. He is surprisingly laid back for a superstar of his calibur. I, on the other hand, turned into a giggling schoolgirl. I managed to squeeze out a "nice to meet you" between huge face engulfing grins and fits of giggles. I thought I could handle it. I mean, if there's one thing the tabloids have taught me, it's that celebrities are people too. Jarvis Cocker is still a superstar.

Hammer Time

When I was thirteen I saw MC Hammer wandering around the Calgary airport wearing what appeared to be beige leather onesie pajamas and a gigantic gold and diamond choker necklace. It was the end of the eighties and I guess that was what passed for bling in those days. I couldn't stop laughing. Even when he and his lone body guard stared me down.
